I. Job Summary
Provides leadership and management of the marketing and communications functions of Committee for Children. Conceives and implements regional and national marketing strategies to drive product sales and build Committee for Children’s organizational and product brand in the marketplace. Manages, motivates, and leads a staff responsible for product channel development, sales promotions, design, editing, online and interactive marketing, direct mail, advertising, and other marketing and communications services.
Partners with Client Relations department to forecast annual sales revenues and design marketing campaigns that support regional sales efforts. Analyzes market, customer, channel, and marketing campaign data to drive results-driven marketing and sales efforts. Responsible for meeting sales goals attributed to marketing channels. Serves on the senior management team and brings a marketing, communications, and advocacy focus to organizational planning activities. Serves as staff support for appropriate Board committees.
II. Essential Functions
- Sales and marketing
- Initiates national and regional target marketing campaigns to drive sales through catalogs, print promotions, advertising, online promotions, and other marketing vehicles. Tests and tracks effectiveness of marketing efforts and adjusts activities for optimum results.
- Partners with Client Relations department leadership to link product promotions and marketing campaigns to sales activities and goals. Supports regionalized marketing initiatives in support of Client Relations sales efforts.
- Produces sales channel reports to measure effectiveness of marketing and direct sales efforts. In response to channel analyses, adjusts marketing efforts and recommends adjustments in sales strategy.
- Establishes and manages a product roadmap for each budget year, identifying product releases and promotions.
- Integrates and updates branding strategy throughout the organization and in the marketplace.
- Directs Committee for Children national conference attendance: trade show exhibiting, networking, presentations, and product overview sessions. Develops or assists staff and clients in developing abstracts and workshops for submission to conferences.
- Sales forecasting and reporting
- Partners with Client Relations department to forecast product sales and training revenues for annual organizational budget. Monitors sales revenues and revises marketing strategies and sales projections as needed.
- Produces sales and customer reports required for marketing and sales analysis and planning.
- Implements strategic and tactical adjustments in marketing efforts in response to customer and sales analysis.
- Product management
- Determines current and prospective channels for products and services.
- Obtains and analyzes market, client, and product trends for the purpose of product and marketing planning.
- Initiates, plans, and executes market research projects; provides summary reports and recommendations to other departments and the management team.
- Manages product lifecycle from conception to end-of-life. Brings marketing/client perspective to new product development and selection.
- In partnership with the Director of Client Relations, identifies and evaluates programs and products created externally for inclusion in the Committee for Children marketing and distribution efforts.
- Departmental management
- Manages departmental staff to develop objectives, action plans, and timeline, monitor progress and realize departmental goals.
- Supports staff performance through formal and informal coaching, feedback, and performance reviews.
- Develops and manages marketing department budget. Monitors projected vs. actual expenditures and revises budget or plans as needed.
- Design, editing, and Web management
- Directs all marketing promotion projects (online and offline).
- Directs Web site content, presentation, and design. Analyzes Web statistics and adjusts strategy for maximum impact and return on investment.
- Manages all functions of Web: design, content, editing, search optimization, promotions, client sites and forums, online store, donations, etc., to support Committee for Children departmental needs.
- Communications and advocacy
- Develops and executes comprehensive communications and media plans designed to raise Committee for Children’s profile in local, regional, and national arenas, in support of sales, fund development, and organizational advocacy goals.
- Directs media outreach, response, and community publicity campaigns. Ensures prompt and professional response to media inquiries.
- Other essential functions
- Demonstrates customer service focus.
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance of set work schedule.
- Performs other tasks as requested by supervisor. The essential functions are not the exclusive requirements of this position.
- Required education and experience
- Bachelor's degree in marketing or related field.
- Five years’ marketing management experience with departmental management-level responsibilities for managing budgets; achieving multiple complex operational goals; and evaluating, leading, and supervising staff.
- Experience in a business-to-business marketing environment.
- Multiple years managing online marketing initiatives.
- Experience directing new product launch strategies.
- Experience serving as a media and public relations contact for an organization.
- Preferred additional education and experience
- Master's degree in Business Administration or similar field.
- Management experience in a marketing and sales environment.
- At least three years’ experience in educational marketing.
- Experience in a licensing-based sales environment.
- Experience in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Expertise and experience in sales forecasting, sales management, and budget management.
- Demonstrated success in building, sustaining, and retaining a highly qualified staff of professionals.
- Demonstrated skills in managing multiple complex projects.
- Clear understanding of business marketing strategy.
- Proven ability to bring products to market, manage product sales performance, and interpret customer sales data to inform marketing strategy.
- Expertise and experience in media relations, e-commerce, and advertising.
- Critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Excellent proposal-writing, speech-writing, and marketing copywriting skills.
- Ability to work effectively with people from both for-profit and nonprofit sectors.
- Excellent leadership skills (coaching, mentoring, articulation of vision and ideas, strategic planning).
- General office with daily moderate computer use (less than 3 continuous hours).
- Moderate long-distance travel required.
- May involve a work schedule exceeding 40 hours in a week with some evening and weekend hours.
- May involve lifting, moving, and carrying 20–50-pound objects at conferences.
