Siblings Say the Darndest Things

Today's blog was written by trainer Catrina Cuevas, with help from her younger sister.

Catrina CuevasTwo of my younger siblings have dealt with bullying in their schools over the past few years. I asked my sister, a senior in high school in Colorado, to share her thoughts about bullying. Here are some of her thoughts and feelings in her own words. I thank and love her for her courage and insight.

“What's wrong with the world today? Bullying has become such an epidemic lately. People are so oblivious to it! You could be sitting in a classroom and another student could be attacking your worth and the teacher just sits there, doesn't even notice.

I've realized that bullying can come from everywhere: your parents, your teachers, your peers, your enemies, your friends, even yourself. How sad is it that bullying has become such a common occurrence that we have to cut ourselves down as well? What happened to being confident and capable and being perfectly happy with yourself, flaws included? Mind you, I don't think I've ever felt like that, but don't you think it would feel amazing? We are so critical. We criticize everyone and anyone, and why? Because we can? We bully to make ourselves feel better. If we can find one way that we are better than another person, we feel pleasure.

Don't you think the world would be a better place if we could all be confident in ourselves so we wouldn't have to cut down others? If we could stop sending out negativity, and work things out? I have seen the effects of bullying, both inside and out. It's horrible to think that some of the most amazing people I have ever known feel worthless because the remarks of someone else. I know bullying isn't going to stop in a day, but maybe, just maybe if we think before we comment, hold back those biting words, we could fix the world even the smallest bit.”
