Two Policy Approaches Your State Can Take | By: Committee for Children FIRST APPROACH: Conduct an SEL lesson for your state legislator On January 26, 2017, Committee for Children will partner with an elected official to bring social-emotional learning (SEL) to the halls of the Washington State Legislature. Using Committee for Children’s Second Step curriculum, an experienced Washington teacher will deliver a lesson to legislators showing the impact of SEL on the lives of children and offering elected officials a few skills that could improve their interactions with colleagues. SECOND APPROACH: Hold a State Advocacy Day On February 8, 2017, Committee for Children returns to the Capitol with its state legislative agenda and a group of civic-minded advocates from communities around Washington to help policy makers understand the importance of legislation promoting SEL, supporting trauma-informed practices and protecting children from abuse.
