You got teachers off to a great start. It’s the perfect time to demonstrate that the Second Step Program is a priority this year. Take these three simple leadership steps to motivate and support your teachers and staff. The tools listed are available to registered users of the Second Step Program on SecondStep.org.

1. Observe a lesson! Download the easy-to-use K–5 Lesson Observation Form, or find the form at the link below when you’re logged in to SecondStep.org.

2.  Each lesson has a double-sided Following Through Card for classroom teachers to use to reinforce skills introduced during the lesson. In cases where a counselor or other staff member teaches the lesson, classroom teachers should be present and participate. The cards are available in the teaching materials notebook and you can find them at the link below on SecondStep.org when you’re logged in.

3. Use Second Step morning announcements. They’re in the Principal Toolkit!

Don’t have this great resource yet? The Second Step Principal Toolkit is available to support a whole-school implementation by reinforcing Second Step skills in and out of the classroom; encouraging positive behavior with consistent, common language; and strengthening efforts to create a safe supportive environment. Keep the SEL momentum going with these great tools!  Getting the whole school involved will help you motivate staff and support effective implementation.
