Success Story

North Plains Elementary School counselor Karen Billette teaches the SECOND STEP program at all levels, uses supplemental books (such as those from the SECOND STEP book lists), and weaves it all into the district’s implementation of PBIS. She has been using the SECOND STEP program with PBIS for three years, and in that time, the 320-student school has experienced a drop in office referrals of 53 percent. Not only that, but the type of referrals has changed. Billette says, “There are fewer incidents of an aggressive or violent nature.”

Simply put, Billette says, “Spending those years with 'SECOND STEP' plus the supplemental books plus the PBIS program I was already doing, we don’t have behavior issues.”
