SECOND STEP Family Guide

Strengthening Skills at Home and School
The SECOND STEP Family Guide familiarizes parents and caregivers with the problem-solving, empathy, and emotion-management skills their children are learning in elementary school, so they can reinforce the concepts at home.

Practicing at home with their families increases the likelihood that children will be able to absorb and use these new skills confidently.

With the SECOND STEP Family Guide, schools host special family trainings consisting of discussions and videos. Parents receive SECOND STEP handouts and magnets as reminders of the simple steps that children and adults can use to solve problems and manage emotions at home.

The Family Guide contains an overview video, three skill-training videos, a Facilitator's Guide and 25 sets of skill-step magnets.

Topics

  • Session 1: What Is the SECOND STEP Program, and How Can Families Help?
  • Session 2: Empathy: Caring About Yourself and Others
  • Session 3: Impulse Control: Thinking before You Act
  • Session 4: Solving Problems
  • Session 5: Dealing with Anger (Part I)
  • Session 6: Dealing with Anger (Part II)
