TALKING ABOUT TOUCHING
Sample Lessons

Unit I: Personal Safety
Each level of the TALKING ABOUT TOUCHING program begins with a personal safety unit that focuses on fire- and traffic-safety skills. Later lessons stress the Always Ask First Rule. For example, children learn to ask permission from parents or others in charge before they go somewhere with someone. This unit sets the context for the program.

Read Grade 3 Lesson 2: Fire Safety—Never Playing with Fire.

Read Pre/K Lesson 6: The Always Ask First Rule—Getting Permission Before Going with Someone.

Unit II: Touching Safety
This unit helps children gain a concrete understanding of touching safety while applying the Touching Rule as their guide for decision making. Children also learn that they should ask for help from a parent or other trusted adult if someone breaks the Touching Rule.

Read Grade 2 Lesson 11: Using the Touching Rule with Peers—Asking for Help.

Unit III: Assertiveness and Support
In this unit children learn to practice various ways of saying "no" in unsafe situations. They're taught to ask for help from a parent or other trusted adult. Children generally need many opportunities to practice these skills before they can use them effectively.

Read Grade 1 Lesson 11: Standing Up for Yourself by Saying "No."

See a PDF of a lesson card that contains all the sample lessons above.
