Books in the WOVEN WORD Program

Original Books
The first four books in the WOVEN WORD kit were written especially for the program. Scripted lessons accompanying these books ease teachers and children into dialogic reading and the Question with Care technique.

Friendship Alphabet bookThe Friendship Alphabet
This alphabet book features colorful photographs for each letter and is written in fun rhymes that introduce important social and emotional concepts. Each pair of letters in the book presents a different aspect of friendship.

Gloria bookGloria's First Day
Gloria is quiet on her first day of school because she has recently moved and she misses her cousins. She speaks Spanish and only knows a few words of English, but she opens up when her new friend Alex, her teacher Ms. Sandoval, and the other children find ways to welcome her.

Long Wait bookThe Long Wait
In this second story about Ms. Sandoval's class, Danny's feelings change from worry to excitement as he waits over the course of a week-with the help of Ms. Sandoval and his friend Tony-for his first loose tooth to fall out.

Rhymitis bookRhymitis
In this third story about Ms. Sandoval's class, Nadia, Denise, and Tony play a rhyming game until Denise and Nadia skip Tony's turn. Tony finds a way to manage his anger and work with his friends to resolve the problem.

About the Authors

Committee for Children current and former program developers Wendie Bramwell, Brooke Doyle, Bridgid Normand, and Laura Smith worked with consultants, reviewers, and outside advisory groups to create the Woven Word books. A diversity advisory team consisting of Cam Do Wong, Gloria Trinidad, Colleen Almojuela, Judy Serquinia, and Diane Holz also worked on the books. Many of the names and situations in the books come from the real experiences of the members of this group.

About the Artist
The WOVEN WORD illustrator, Julie Kim, understands the importance of conveying emotions and using scenes and surroundings familiar to children. Julie was born in Seoul, Korea and moved to the United States when she was seven years old. She has published art in Cricket Magazine and illustrated the book My Special Space, published by Scholastic Library Publishing.

Trade Books
As the program progresses, teachers use more of their own questions and knowledge of their students to construct dialogic reading sessions with two trade books, Swimmy and Dear Juno.

Swimmy bookSwimmy
Swimmy is a classic children's book by Leo Lionni that has been in print for 40 years. It is the story of a little fish who devises a plan to get the other fish to cooperate in order to keep them all safe from a big tuna.

Dear Juno bookDear Juno
Dear Juno
is the story of the relationship between Juno, a small boy in the United States, and his grandmother in Korea, who exchange creative "letters" and small gifts.

Additional Books
The program also provides teachers with reading guides for an additional 20 published books.
