Scope and Sequence
Program Phases
The WOVEN WORD program is a year-long program presented in three phases.
Phase 1 (4 Weeks)
Teachers become familiar with the program, watch the training video, and begin practicing the dialogic reading technique and preparing for small-group readings. Families are trained to use the dialogic reading technique at home.
During Phase 1, teachers:
- Explore the Program Guide and WOVEN WORD kit.
- Watch the Teacher Training Video and the Family Video.
- Plan reading groups, schedule, and space.
- Practice the "Question with CARE" technique with a favorite book.
- Hold a family night.
Phase 2 (13 Weeks)
Teachers use scripted materials to read each of the six WOVEN WORD books in small groups and to conduct social and emotional skill-building activities. Parents read the take-home books with their children, creating the vital link between home and school literacy.
Phase 2 is organized into six units, each of which focuses on one of the WOVEN WORD books included in the kit. The book/unit titles are:
- The Friendship Alphabet
- Gloria's First Day
- The Long Wait
- Rhymitis
- Swimmy
- Dear Juno
The books are presented in two-week cycles:
- Week 1: Teachers read the book three times to small groups of children using Question with CARE. Readings are designed to be 20 minutes long. After the third reading, each child receives a take-home book.
- Week 2: Teachers lead a skill-building activity with the entire class.
Phase 3 (12 Weeks or More)
Teachers use their dialogic reading skills with at least 12 additional choices from a list of 20 recommended books that have strong social and emotional content. Teachers develop their own readings using suggested questions provided on the reading guides. Recommended titles include Stellaluna, Where the Wild Things Are, and Leo the Late Bloomer.
Teachers read one book per week for the rest of the school year. It is important to continue to read each book three times to each small group using Question with CARE.
