Yardsticks: Children in the Classroom Ages 4–14: A Resource for Parents and Teachers by Chip Wood

Reading level: Adult

What's so great about this book? It offers clear and concise information about developmental stages with a focus on kids in the classroom. And it's written by someone who is not only in the know, but has a deep respect for and curiosity about children.

You can use these "yardsticks" to revise or create your classroom curriculum. The book includes helpful curriculum suggestions and book lists for children, teachers, and parents.

Wood has worked with children from preschool through eighth grade for over 25 years. He is the co-founder of the Northeast Foundation for Children, the developers of Responsive Classroom.
