Government Funding Sources
The following is a list of common public funding information and sources for character education and prevention programs.

Department of Education Grants (ED)
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) is providing nearly $38 billion this year to states and school districts, primarily through formula-based grant programs, to improve elementary and secondary schools and meet the special needs of students.

Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities
The Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools aims to create safe schools; respond to crises, drug abuse, and violence prevention; ensure the health and well-being of students; and promote development of good character and citizenship.

Partnership for Character Education
This program awards grants for up to four years to eligible state and local education agencies to design and implement character education programs that teach students core ethical concepts, such as civics, citizenship, justice, responsibility, and respecting themselves and others.

21st Century Community Learning Centers
This program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools.

Early Reading First
The program supports the development of early childhood centers of excellence that serve primarily children from low-income families and that focus on all areas of development—especially on the early language, cognitive, and pre-reading skills that prepare children for continued school success.

No Child Left Behind—Title I
More than 50,000 public schools across the country use Title I funds to provide additional academic support and learning opportunities to help low-achieving children master challenging curricula and meet state standards in core academic subjects.

Administration for Children and Families (ACF)
ACF is responsible for federal programs that promote the economic and social well-being of families, children, individuals, and communities.

Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
The CDC awards nearly 85 percent of its budget through grants and contracts to help accomplish its mission to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability

Health Resources and Services Administration
Grant announcements for health information technology/ HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, primary health care, and rural health

National Institute on Health (NIH)
NIH is the steward of medical and behavioral research for the nation. Its mission is science in pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.

National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH)
NIMH’s mission is reducing the burden of mental illness and behavioral disorders through research on mind, brain, and behavior including violence in children.

Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)
OJJDP collaborates with professionals from diverse disciplines to improve juvenile justice policies and practices by supporting states, local communities, and tribal jurisdictions in their efforts to develop and implement effective programs for juveniles.

Office of National Drug-Control Policy (ONDCP)
The principal purpose of ONDCP is to establish policies, priorities, and objectives for the Nation's drug-control program. The goals of the program are to reduce illicit drug use, manufacturing, and trafficking; drug-related crime and violence; and drug-related health consequences.

Safe Schools, Healthy Students (SS/HS)
The SS/HS Initiative is a unique federal grant-making program designed to prevent violence and substance abuse among our nation's youth, schools, and communities.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) works to improve the quality of substance-abuse-prevention practices nationwide. Through its discretionary grant programs, the center provides states, communities, organizations, and families with tools to promote protective factors and to reduce risk factors for substance abuse.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)
Federal funding is available in the form of grants, benefit programs for individuals and families, loans, and contract opportunities from DHHS.

White House Faith-Based and Community Initiative
Faith-based and community organizations (FBCOs) have a long tradition of helping Americans in need and together represent an integral part of our nation's social-service network.
