Making Our Vision a Reality

As we strive to promote the safety, well-being, and success of children in school and in life, Committee for Children is proud to provide tools that help children thrive. We work with educators, parents, policymakers, and partner organizations to deliver research-based programs, advocate for public policies, and provide leadership in our field. We believe education and prevention efforts that begin in early childhood and continue into adulthood achieve the greatest impact.

Promoting Social-Emotional Skills

We’re committed to developing and supporting the use of research-based social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula in and out of school. SEL creates a positive school climate that supports learning and academic success while narrowing the achievement gap. Contributing to greater well-being, social-emotional skills help prevent youth violence, bullying, and substance abuse. To foster healthy development in children, we encourage parents, educators, and caregivers to model these skills at home and in the classroom, and we’re working tirelessly to reach children with the greatest needs. As we promote SEL, we advocate for public policies that support funding and practices that build knowledge and expand the field.

Protecting Children from Violence and Abuse

We’re pioneers in the field of child protection, devoted to keeping children safe from violence and abuse. Far too many children have experienced trauma that may cause them to act out, withdraw, or have difficulty paying attention—impeding their ability to learn and thrive. Advancing research- and evidence-based practices designed to protect children from violence and abuse is a priority for our organization. By training teachers, parents, and other adults to recognize, respond to, and report child abuse and violence as well as teaching children to recognize and report abuse when it occurs, we can make a difference in the lives of children. We advocate for policies and legislation that protect children through abuse prevention, bullying prevention, and expanded SEL funding. We work to integrate research-based approaches that build a safe and nurturing environment where children can thrive.
