Anti-Bullying Superhero Campaign Wins Silver in the Anthem Awards

SEATTLE—February 15, 2023—Today, The Webby Awards announced the winners of the second annual Anthem Awards. Committee for Children, a global leader in social-emotional learning, was honored with Silver in the category of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: National Campaign for its 2021 Captain Compassion® initiative to prevent racially motivated bullying.

“At the heart of Committee for Children and the Captain Compassion campaign is the belief that each and every child, no matter their background, deserves to be safe and thriving in a just and peaceful world,” said VP of PR and Communications at Committee for Children, Shauna McBride. “We are deeply honored to receive this recognition from the Anthem Awards.”

The Anthem Awards honor the purpose and mission-driven work of people, companies, and organizations worldwide. By amplifying the voices that spark global change, the awards are defining a new benchmark for meaningful work that inspires others to take action in their own communities.

In support of aspiring young upstanders, Committee for Children’s annual Captain Compassion campaign teaches kids and families how to activate their upstander power and recognize, report, and stand against racially motivated bullying. The campaign offers researched-based superhero webcomics and other free, engaging resources. Illustrated by Nick Butler, the 2021 comic series tells the story of how Kid Kinder® and his friends learn to activate their upstander power to help a fellow student who is bullied online and at school because of her race.

“About one out of five students report being bullied during the school year,” said VP of Education, Research, and Impact at Committee for Children, Tia Kim, PhD. “And students frequently report being bullied based on identity characteristics like race. Captain Compassion empowers each of us with the skills to create a kinder world, free from racially motivated bullying.”
