Measuring Bullying Behavior Just Got Easier

New Survey Instrument Helps Educators Improve Learning Environment

ATLANTA, Feb. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — The International Survey Associates today launched a new tool, the Social, Emotional and Bullying Behavior Survey (SEBBS), to help schools determine the frequency of bullying behaviors and gauge the effectiveness of, or need for, intervention or prevention efforts.

Designed for middle school students, the SEBBS collects data and delivers reports that assess bullying perceptions and problem behaviors that affect student engagement. This new survey instrument contains 80 questions on social and emotional skills, peer relations, bullying behaviors, school climate and substance abuse. Within these categories, specific topics include: problem solving, victimization, bystander behavior, school bullying-related problems, understanding others, emotion management, impulse control, perspective taking, school culture, peer culture, and substance abuse, including the Drug-Free Schools core measures.

The survey is available in either paper or online formats.

“With SEBBS, educators will use the results to inform school improvement and anti-bullying policies,” commented Jay Gleaton, ISA CEO. “The survey results will also give schools the ability to define the learning environment and seek programming or funding to address deficits or support successes.”

The SEBBS was developed by a team of education research professionals including: Thomas J. Gleaton, EdD, ISA founder; Tia Kim, PhD, research scientist, Committee for Children; Scott C. Bates, PhD, Utah State University; Anthony Wheeler, PhD, Utah State University; and Jack J. Pollard, PhD, senior research analyst, ISA. All items on the instrument have been tested to ensure compliance with psychometric properties and for age-level appropriateness and readability.

The validated survey tool can also be used to collect comparative data from year-to-year or measure effectiveness of social skills programs by using SEBBS as a pre- and post-test to determine knowledge and skill improvement.
